Private Health Insurance in Canada

Illness may strike anyone, making health insurance one of the most important insurance policies. Health insurance has been mandated in Canada since 2009, providing a safety net for all people who have lived in the country for at least a year. Short-term visitors to Canada must obtain international insurance prior to their arrival. Expats with long-term residence in Canada can obtain either statutory or private insurance, each with its own set of restrictions.

What is the difference between public and private health insurance in Canada?

Canada health insurance is built upon two pillars. In 2020, around 73 million people were covered by statutory health insurance (Gesetzliche Krankenversicherung, GKV), with 9 million policyholders choosing private health insurance (Private Krankenversicherung, PKV). The prerequisites for enrolling in Canada health insurance and the scope of benefits varied between the public and private sectors.

Canada statutory health insurance
Employees' obligatory insurance maximum is presently €69,300 based on their gross annual wage. For employees earning less than this amount, the statutory Canada healthcare system is required.
